Special Episode 009 with Sara Raymond:  Meditation Tips and a Guided Meditation to help you Open your Heart Chakra and Connect with Loving Kindness

Today’s episode is a little different format than our typical interview.  We have a special meditation for you to help you open your heart chakra and connect to the universal energy of love.  We hear from our listeners and our community on social media that you want to start a consistent meditation practice, but you don’t know how or you aren’t sure you can do it.  So for today, I have some tips for you first, then you will hear Sara lead you through the guided mediation.

First, let go of any expectations or ideas about what you think a meditation practice “should” look like.  Let go of the idea that you have to be a master at meditation to get started.  You wouldn’t expect to start playing the piano with a piece by Bach without at least practicing the basics like learning to read music and play the scales.  So always approach your practice with a beginner’s mind.

Don’t expect your mind to stop thinking completely, it won’t.  When you observe a thought, acknowledge it, but try not to get caught up in the story of that thought or where it will lead you.  Simply come back to your breath or a sensation in your body as an anchor.  Be careful not to beat yourself up for thinking, it is ok!

Carve out time for a consistent practice.  Just like the piano example I mentioned before, you will get better at the skill with consistent practice and time.  When you feel like you don’t have time for your meditation practice, that is when you need it the most.

Seek support of a group of like minded people.  There are many groups that meet in person weekly or monthly to practice meditation together.  There is something really special about the energy of a group of people meditating together.  There are many online communities out there for support as well.

Try using a mantra, music, chanting, or a guided meditation to help focus during your meditation time.  Consider creating a special, comfortable environment for meditation, including essential oils, candles, salt lamps, a shawl to cover up with and a cushion to sit on.  Or anything else that will create a sacred space.  While these things may be helpful, really what is important is to just show up!  Your practice can look however you want.  Just try not to practice while driving.
