Move on to Joy and Practice Compassion
“We’re here to feel joy and absorb all of life’s beauty we can. If pain comes, let it pass quickly through. Then move on to joy. It’s a conscious choice.”
~ Melody Beattie from “Journey to the Heart”
How will you choose to move on to joy today?
If you have followed The Mindful Movement for some time, you may know that I tend to stay out of politics and tune out the news. Some may believe this is naïve or ignorant, but I feel it is a choice to move on to joy. It is a deliberate choice to recognize my need for mental health and the reduction of stress. If you live in the United States, it is difficult not to know what’s going on in the news these days.
I imagine no one will argue about the fact that 2020 has been a difficult year. I won’t list the many insults and challenges that have caused pain and suffering, you are probably all too aware of them. Instead, I consciously choose to move on to joy.
We cannot deny that there is pain, yet we do not need to add the extra layer of suffering by resisting what is or trying to change that which cannot be changed. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying you should sit idle and not do anything. However, acceptance of reality allows you to reduce the extra layer of unnecessary suffering.
Today, I choose to nurture my physical and emotional needs with gentle movement and meditation, connect with nature and eat nutritious foods that will support my wellbeing. Today I choose compassion for other people to reduce suffering (mine and theirs).
“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” ~Dalai Lama
The definition of compassion is the sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it. Or the wish that all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.
Les discusses how to mindfully apply the practice of compassion in this mindful tip. Be a witness to an interaction with another person and ask yourself “What’s it like for that person?” Then respond skillfully with compassion.
Today, choose to move on to joy with this meditation to cultivate compassion, breathe deeply, connect with the feelings of your heart and remember:
Just like me, everyone has known sadness. May we all experience love and joy to balance the sadness.
Just like me, everyone is doing the best they can. May we all offer compassion to ourselves and others. May we all accept compassion from ourselves and others.
