How To Get To Know Your Magnificent Healing Mind This Week
“You have the power to heal yourself, and you need to know that. We think so often that we are helpless, but we are not. We always have the power of our minds. Claim and consciously use your power.” –Louise Hay
Embracing your Inner Healing Power
Friends, you’ve probably heard quotes like the one above pretty often. And, it can feel like a type of bypass or victim-blaming to hear that your mindset has so much self-healing power when you’re deep in a physical, emotional, or spiritual struggle.
AND, there is SO much science behind the power we have to self-heal. Placebo data, anecdotal stories of physicians and their patients, and spiritual awakenings all point to the power of mindset as a lynchpin in our wellbeing.
The following books are just a few of the many that talk about this very topic:
- You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay
- The Biology of Belief, by Bruce Lipton
- Mind to Matter, by Dawson Church
- The Body Keeps the Score, by Bessel van der Kolk
Also, check out Heal, the documentary.
Even when our outcomes may seem the grimmest, we can reduce our suffering and enhance our feelings of ease when we focus on the power of self-healing.
So how do we overcome our inner defeat, feelings of failure, and depression and anxiety symptoms long enough to let our minds work their healing magic?
Self-Healing is Simple, not Mysterious
While “miracle” transformations may seem part of the mystical realm, more often they have their roots in consistent self-care and mindset-shifting practices. (Many of which have plenty of research to back up their healing efficacy, by the way.) There are a number of amazing and inspiring stories of healing in a few of the above mentioned books.
There are many free and simple tools at your disposal to support your healing. One way to begin grooming your brain away from suffering and toward more ease and wellness is with a simple technique called “box breathing.” Here’s how it works:
- Find a quiet space and a comfortable way to sit or lie down (sitting in a supportive chair is fine, so is lying on a mat or bed.)
- Close your eyes and begin to deepen your breathing. With your mind’s eye, begin to draw a box–and try matching one line you “draw” with your thoughts with a slow inhale.
- The next line of the box should match your exhale.
- Fill your lungs deeply with each line of inhaling, and breathe out just as completely for each exhale “line” you draw inside your head.
- With each repetition of mentally drawing your box, allow your body to sink more profoundly into relaxation and calm.
Repeating an exercise such as box breathing consistently for several days could help you avoid a panic attack, can lower your blood pressure, and can elevate your mood. These well-documented meditation results prove that self-healing is a thing, even if it may not heal a broken bone or open wound by itself.
The Synergy of Inner and Outer Healing Modalities
It’s also true that using positive mindset practices can provide significant assistance or amplification of external healing interventions.
For example, think about the last time you had blood drawn. Which felt better–taking a deep breath and asking your mind to relax while the needle pierced your skin, or clenching and tightening your whole body in fear?
We can guide ourselves through uncomfortable procedures when we practice using our minds to calm our bodies so that our caregivers can help us more effectively.
Self-Healing and Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool to develop our self-healing “muscles.” Through the use of a gentle trance state, a trained hypnotherapist can help you rewire harmful self-messaging, dial down old and new fears, and clear the way for the mind to do its healing work in your body. As we know, healing happens most effectively when we are in a relaxed state.
You may experience pain reduction, symptom improvement, and an enhanced sense of well-being from the process.
Though it IS crucial to view mindset and self-healing as a powerful piece of your well-being mosaic, feeling better IS possible with just a few sessions and sometimes as little as one.
Les and I will be launching a healing hypnotherapy workshop on September 9th, and will teach you how to work WITH your mind to support, not oppose, your own healing ability. We invite you to learn more about this offering HERE, and hope you’ll join us soon!
Take care, friends. Until we meet again, take a moment of gratitude for the healing potential of your powerful mind–that potential exists inside all of us–all you must do is find a way to open the door. We can help.
