I bet you’d like to change one or two things about yourself. Who doesn’t?
You might unwrap a candy bar and say “I shouldn’t eat so much junk food,” or find yourself in a miserable relationship and wonder why you keep choosing the same problematic people. The desire to change is consistent in our human-ness, and also can feel impossible to achieve.
So how does change work? And how can you make the changes you want actually stick and stay? (That’s the million-dollar question!)
Change begins from within. And it all starts with this ONE thing::
AWARENESS.
You cannot change a thing you don’t know exists. If you gulp down 10 candy bars in a sitting and don’t feel it’s a problem or don’t experience any consequences, change will NOT happen.
You are not aware that this behavior might require change.
If you keep choosing relationship partners who don’t treat you well, but you don’t experience the mistreatment, then change will never happen (even if all your friends and loved ones encourage you to leave.)
If your job is unfulfilling and your work hours are causing you exhaustion and even illness, but you don’t see the connection, then you won’t do anything about it.
NONE of this is a judgement upon you. Once again, You Are Not Broken. You simply have not reached a tipping point where the natural effects of your current circumstances and choices cause more discomfort than reward.
OR, you may be unaware that a different circumstance or choice is even available to you. Especially if your current situation feels “normal,” as in familiar.
So, first name, if you have finally become aware of a challenge or circumstance in your life or yourself you wish were different, congratulations. That is THE first step to making change happen.
I break down the rest of the change process (and why our brains resist it so much) in my book You Are Not Broken.
