“You get peace of mind not by thinking about it or imagining it, but by quietening and relaxing the restless mind.”

– Remez Sasson

In general, we have purpose-built spaces for completing just about every task. We have kitchens for food preparation, bedrooms for sleeping, offices for working and so on. At the Mindful Movement, we have always placed a large emphasis on creating a space for meditation as well.  A calm and inspiring space maximizes the effectiveness of meditation practice and allows for distraction free decompression. How can you create your own meditation space?

Choose Your Space

When choosing a meditation space, there are a few things you might want to keep in mind. You will want to be sure to select a space that is calm, soothing and open. If your space is limited, you can always section off part of another room to practice meditation. Les and I have a spot in our bedroom that we use for meditation.  At the same time, do your best to select an area free from distractions like electronics and other people. You can also consider lighting when choosing your space. We have found natural light to be the most conducive to a relaxed atmosphere, but the choice is yours!

Make Your Space Comfortable

Once you’ve selected the perfect spot for meditation, it’s time to make it comfy! Naturally, the more comfortable you are, the more you’ll benefit from practicing meditation and the less you will find you attention drifting to you dis-comfort. Start by decluttering the area because clutter of the environment translates to clutter in the mind. In an ideal situation, you will be able to work with a nearly blank slate and make additions from there. But that’s not always possible, so make the most of what you have.  Pillows and cushions make comfortable seating options that you can arrange in a manner that best suits your posture. You might choose to use yoga blocks or blankets to support your legs for comfort.  Or perhaps sit in a chair if that is what your body needs.  You may like to add your choice of essential oils. This can act as a cue to let your mind know it’s time for meditation.  Although any scent will do, I love the relaxing scents such as lavender, citrus, and sandalwood.

Make Your Space Inspiring

Now that you have a comfortable area for practicing meditation, you can tie the whole space together by making some additions that will inspire you to find your inner peace. Consider decorating the space with personal touches like art or textiles. Plants also make a fantastic addition and can serve as a way to bring nature into your space.  If it is safe to do so in your space, consider candles.  There are even electric candles if necessary.  Let us know what you love to have in your meditation space to make it inspiring.
