Though AWARENESS is the first step in making meaningful, sustainable change in our lives, what happens next?
The next step in the change process has to be ACCEPTANCE—in other words, you stop judging the behaviors or circumstances you want to change.
It can be SO tempting after awareness to jump right into intense and focused ACTION, because once we become aware of an issue, we also become uncomfortable.
We see ourselves doing the “old” thing still, but now there are noticeable consequences, like:
- Understanding the affect your perfectionism has on your children
- People-pleasing in relationships (and the exhaustion and harm it brings)
- Losing money on promotions because you’re afraid to apply (even though you’re more than qualified)
Your Higher Self begins to know what will bring you satisfaction and contentment, but other parts of you are mired in old beliefs and old comfort zones. As soon as you start to make changes, those parts feel threatened, and you self-sabotage after a few days or weeks of trying out new behaviors.
Instead, it’s imperative to view those parts of you in a compassionate and even grateful light. What they’ve done for you so far has enabled you to survive and grow to where you are now. Just because they might not be useful in the future to you doesn’t negate their use and value over all.
So, this week, look at the parts of you that you want to change, and just for a moment, THANK them from the bottom of your heart. Appreciate them for keeping you safe, for bringing you some feeling of love, acceptance, or belonging. Let them know how valuable they are.
Let them know you’ll always appreciate them, and now it’s time for them to consider retiring. To rest, to change “jobs.”
We’ll cover how to begin doing that in the next few posts. Meanwhile, I unpack what this deep acceptance looks like in my new book, You Are Not Broken.
You can order a copy by clicking the title You Are Not Broken anywhere in this post.
