“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.”
– Oscar Wilde
An estimated 85% of people in the United States suffer from low self-esteem, a shockingly high number highlighting the pressures we put on ourselves to measure up. This low feeling of self-worth not only impacts your thoughts but can negatively affect your health, relationships and career. The large percentage of people battling low self-esteem shows a larger problem with what we value and how our overall happiness can be tied to immaterial things.
Meditation practice can help build self-worth to increase happiness. The practice encourages focusing on thoughts and feelings in the present moment, allowing you to appreciate the life you are living, including on a larger scale, the people, activities and relationships that truly matter.
How You Can Build Self-Worth to Increase Happiness
Meditation can serve as the bedrock of positive self-worth. During the time you practice meditation, you can pause from the busy to-do list and appreciate the positive things both about yourself and your life. That could be a recent accomplishment, some time spent with a loved one, or just a moment to reflect on something about yourself that you like or simply don’t hate.
Practicing meditation also presents an opportunity to skillfully manage negative thoughts and reduce the suffering they may otherwise cause. When a negative thought enters your mind during a meditation session, you can recognize it in the moment, allow it to pass through you and offer yourself compassion. Simply acknowledging and allowing gives these negative thoughts or ideas room to be processed and therefore not stored within you. You can also take physical steps to remain calm and nurture yourself by slowing your breath, relaxing any tense muscles and envisioning that thought leaving your mind.
Different Ways to Build Self Confidence
While meditation can help build self-worth to increase happiness, it is beneficial to pair it with other positive techniques. Visualization is a tool that can be used during meditation to improve self-esteem. If you can, create a picture in your head of the person you’d like to be. Just the act of doing this can stimulate your creativity and subconscious brain to reinforce these positive thoughts. You can use meditation to think about the steps you want to take to improve your confidence and self-worth, which do not need to be big goals or overly ambitious if you don’t want them to be; they can be small steps to build a more positive self-image.
Additionally, using manifesting is a practice that allows you to visualize the life you want and more importantly, how you want to feel and be.
Lastly, I would highly recommend 1:1 Hypnotherapy. Because building confidence was originally what brought me to meditation, it is a passion of mine to help others do the same. I empower people who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and anxious and who are motivated for change, yet feeling limited by their beliefs.
Hypnotherapy is an extremely powerful tool to support building self-worth and positive beliefs. If you decide you want to work one on one with a hypnotherapist, I’d love to help you!
Happiness is Impossible without Self-Esteem
A person’s overall happiness can be challenging to gauge, but one thing remains indisputable: a person cannot be happy without genuinely loving themselves. Many of the reasons people dislike themselves actually start outside of their own minds, either through comments other people have made or through social media, magazines, etc.
All people are unique and have things in their life that has the potential to bring pride and happiness. As a culture, we may too often measure outside things – what job we have, the size of our bank account, or the number of the scale – as a reflection of ourselves. Some people may reach a level of outside success that may leave them still feeling empty. Regardless of how much we succeed or achieve, if we compare ourselves to others and their journey, we will always find areas where we fall short.
Slowing down and taking time to assess what is important to you and what your values are can give you perspective. The real things that matter are your relationships and the people in your life that bring you joy. Meditation can allow you to focus on the positive and build self-worth to increase happiness. You can take the time to develop your inner cheerleader and positively reflect on the things about yourself that you like. Being mindful can be an excellent way to step away from the busy distractions and excel in the positive things in your life. We need to be grateful for all that we have and take the necessary time to appreciate them.
