"Everything that happens to you is your teacher. The secret is to learn to sit at the feet of your own life and be taught by it. Everything that happens is either a blessing which is also a lesson, or a lesson which is also a blessing." – Polly Berrien Berends
It sometimes seems that certain people are just born with confidence, and others struggle with negative self-talk and low self-esteem. I believe that all humans are actually born with confidence, and if you loose it at some point, you are actually able to rewire your mind in a way that inspires confidence and improves resilience. Studies have shown that mindfulness meditation doesn’t just decrease stress; it can really change your brain.
How Mindfulness Helps Rewire Your Mind
As we’ve touched on previously, more than 85 percent of people suffer from low self-esteem. To begin building yourself up, you must push away the things that take you down. Negative thoughts and self-talk can dramatically reduce your self-esteem, and these ideas don’t necessarily come from a traumatic event; sometimes, they are born from a seemingly benign conversation or experience. In mindfulness meditation, you can rewire your mind to process these negative thoughts and make them easier to brush out of your mind. The key is to understand where they come from and when they may present themselves, so you can positively work through them. By learning to work through your negative thoughts, you can lead a more fulfilling life focused on the important people and moments that matter most to you.
The Power of Resilience
Along with building confidence, mindfulness can also significantly improve resilience when dealing with stressful events. By building confidence in yourself, you know that you can successfully manage and navigate emotions; therefore, you’re better equipped when life hands you something difficult. Using mindfulness strategies, you can take time to understand the challenge you’re facing, the negative parts, how they make you feel and discover what positives may come from it. This process is essentially a rewiring of your mind so when you’re experiencing a crisis, you’re able to accept the situation for what it is and work on overcoming it, rather than panicking or creating unnecessary suffering.
Creating a New Mindset
Building confidence and creating resilience can be difficult. Sometimes it can feel like people are inherently negative, and your subconscious can turn small insults or slights into a representation of self-worth. These negative thoughts can fester and overtake your mind and your self-image. Mindfulness allows us to interpret these thoughts, positively work through them and focus on the positive things currently going on in life. It involves relaxing your mind and body to respond to stressful experiences and keep you on track with the way that you want to live.
